SYLTKLINIK

ELKA supports the SyltKlinik in the holistic treatment of children with cancer. The clinic has been helping families with children suffering from cancer to recover from the stresses and strains of intensive medical treatment since 1987.

We are enthusiastic about the family-oriented work. It is a matter close to our hearts to support this great work.

INFORMATION ABOUT SYLTKLINIK

SYLT - GREAT LOCATION, HEALING CLIMATE

The location of the SyltKlinik is simply fantastic: directly behind the dunes on the edge of the island village of Wenningstedt. The town center is not far from the SyltKlinik. You can explore the whole island by bike from Wenningstedt.

The clinic grounds are laid out like a small village. There is a lot of greenery and the dunes and beach are right on the doorstep. Peace, tranquillity and a chance to relax.

THE HISTORY OF THE SYLTKLINIK

There used to be a renowned gliding school on the grounds of the SyltKlinik. The school's staff were housed in today's main building from 1930. However, a surgeon was already using the building as a clinic in the 1960s.

On the initiative of Prof. Hansjörg Riem from the Hannover Medical School and Ulrike Baum, chairwoman of the local support association, the idea of offering families with a child suffering from cancer the opportunity to recover from the stresses and strains of intensive medical treatment on Sylt took shape. The first families arrived in Wenningstedt in April 1987.

THE SPONSOR OF THE SYLTKLINIK

The German Childhood Cancer Foundation has been the sponsor of the SyltKlinik since September 2015. It is committed to ensuring that children with cancer can recover and are not disadvantaged compared to other children in terms of their quality of life and future prospects. Providing affected families with competent advice and information is just as much a part of the range of tasks as the support provided by the social fund in financial emergencies.

The German Childhood Cancer Foundation is based in Bonn. It was founded in 1995 by the umbrella organization of regional parents' initiatives "Deutsche Leukämie-Forschungshilfe, Aktion für krebskranke Kinder e.V.".

The work of the German Childhood Cancer Foundation and the German Leukemia Research Foundation - Campaign for Children with Cancer - is mainly financed by donations and membership fees.

CORPORATE PHILOSOPHY - FOCUS ON THE FAMILY

The SyltKlinik is a modern rehabilitation center that offers space for up to 28 families. Ingo Mansen, who runs the clinic, explains: "We don't just look after the sick child. We help the whole family - because the whole family suffers when a child has cancer, including siblings and parents.

He is proud of the fact that the SyltKlinik does not rest on a standard rehab program. Instead, the four-week stay is all about individual care for the family. The SyltKlinik also offers a competent medical and therapeutic background with specialists, psychologists and a large team of physiotherapists and educators.

MEDICAL OFFERS

The medical team works under the direction of Dr. Uwe Steffens. In the modern treatment rooms of the SyltKlinik, each patient is first thoroughly examined in order to decide whether therapies started at home should be continued and new ones established.

Chemotherapy and blood count checks that have already been prescribed can be continued as usual. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychomotor therapy and much more can supplement the individually tailored therapy plans. External staff from various specialist areas are available for further therapeutic services.

PSYCHOSOCIAL THERAPY

From many years of experience, the SyltKlinik team knows what each individual family member needs so that the soul can regain its balance after such a difficult time - because only a holistic view of body and soul can really help. At the beginning of the stay, each family is therefore given not only a medical but also a psychosocial initial consultation.

PEDAGOGICAL-THERAPEUTIC OFFERS

A differentiated care and leisure programme is offered for children from the age of three, the content and organization of which is geared towards the respective age structure of the young to almost adult guests. The playgroup for one- to two-year-old children in the mornings is supervised by one parent. After the initial interviews and examinations, the program for the rehab is determined together with the family.

The possibilities include:

- Individual physiotherapy
- Occupational therapy with different focuses
- Therapeutic riding at the horse farm in Tinnum (from 6 years)
- Therapeutic surfing (in the summer months) and SUPing
- Exercise therapy (e.g. outdoor sports, indoor swimming pool)
- Relaxation exercises for children and young people
- One-to-one sessions for children and young people to help them come to terms with their illness
- Outside of the summer vacation periods, school support lessons (up to 10th grade)
- Individual, couple and family therapy sessions
- Educational counseling
- Autogenic training and progressive muscle relaxation for parents
- Discussion groups and information events
- Non-smoking training

- Art therapy offers
- Creative activities such as Crafts and handicrafts
- Parent-child activities; internal and external leisure activities

HELP THAT IS WELL RECEIVED

The concept of family-oriented rehabilitation (FOR) at the Sylt Clinic, which was developed together with doctors and self-help groups, was finally recognized by the cost bearers after many years of negotiations. However, the official care rates are nowhere near enough to cover the need for holistic treatment of children with cancer, as it is extremely important that siblings and parents, who are always very involved, also receive comprehensive care. A strong family is essential for the further course of treatment. As these costs are not fully covered by the cost bearers, the work of the SyltKlinik is dependent on donors, helpers and supporters. This is the only way to maintain the unique concept and the current quality of content, staff and construction.

You can be sure: Your support will be well received at the SyltKlinik! Of course, your donation can also be used according to your wishes.
